Our first safari today was excellent. We saw four of the big five – elephant, white rhino, lion, and cape buffalo – missing just the elusive leopard. But we also saw giraffe, impala, kudu, hippo, warthog, dwarf mongoose and zebra. There were so many impala (the bottom of the food chain) that we stopped paying attention. We saw a lioness who had hidden her three cubs (per our guide Vusi) because a group of four male lions were prowling. We also saw a pair of female lions nonchalantly following the herd of cape buffalo and waiting for nightfall, to take advantage of the lack of night vision of the buffalo.
I also wish to amend my take on the weather. When you are travelling at 6 a.m. in an open safari truck at 80 km, even a shirt, sweater, jacket and blanket are not enough to keep you warm!
After I publish today’s blog we get ready for our night safari. A busy day.
